New Year's Day
It [was] the first day of the new year, and Pon/go and Per/dita [were] out for a walk with their pets, Ro/ger and An/ita.
それは一年の最初の日のこと。ポンゴとパーディタはペットのロジャーとアニータを連れて（※本当はロジャーとアニータが飼い主）、散歩に出かけていました。
Per/dita [sighed] happily."Oh, Pon/go. What a wonderful year we'[ve just had].
We [found] each other,and now we [have] fifteen puppies to be thankful for!"
パーディタは幸せそうにため息を漏らしました。「あぁポンゴ、去年は本当に素敵な一年だったわね。私達、出会えたでしょ、今じゃ有難いことに１５匹も子犬たちがいるでしょ。」
"Yes, darling, and think of all we [have] to look forward to this year," Pon/go said.
「そのとおりだよ、君。そして今年はどんなことが素敵なことが待っているんだろうね。」とポンゴが言いました。
"[Can] you [believe] the puppies [stayed up] until midnight last night to ring in the new year?" Per/dita [asked]. "And they [were] still awake when we [left]! I [do hope] they [don't tire out] poor Na/nny."
「ゆうべは子犬達ったら、ニューイヤーをお祝いしたくて夜中まで起きてたのよ、信じられる？」パーディタは言いました。「私達が散歩に出かけるときも、まだ起きてたわよね。ナニーを疲れさせちゃってなきゃいいんだけど。」
"Yes, that [was] quite a party we [had] last night," Pon/go [agreed]. "Lu/cky [would have spent] the whole night watching television if we [had allowed] him to. I [have never met] a dog who [liked] to watch so much television!"
「本当にゆうべはすごいパーティーだったなぁ」ポンゴもうなずきました。「もし僕たちが良いよと言ったなら、ラッキーはきっと一晩中テレビを見てただろうね。あんなにテレビ好きな犬なんて見たことないよ。」
"Perhaps we [should be getting] home now," said Per/dita.
「そろそろ家に戻った方がいいかも。」パーディタは言いました。
"I [suppose] we [should]," [said] Pon/go. "But I['m] sure Na/nny [has been takeing] good care of them."
「そうだね。」ポンゴも言いました。「でもきっとナニーがみんなのことはちゃんと面倒みてくれてると思うけどね。」
Pon/go and Per/dita gently [pulled on] their leads to let Ro/ger and An/ita know it [was] time to go home.
ポンゴとパーディタはそっとリードを引っ張って、ロジャーとアニータにもう帰る時間だと教えてあげました。
"Na/nny! Puppies! We['re] home!" [called] Ro/ger as he and An/ita [took off] their boots and Pon/go and Per/dita [brushed off] their paws on the mat in the hall. But no one [answered].
「ナニー！子犬たち！ただいま！」ロジャーとアニーはブーツを脱ぎながら、ポンゴとパーディタは玄関ホールのマットで足を拭きながら、声をかけました。でも誰の返事もありません。
"Pon/go!" [exclaimed] Per/dita, her panic [rising]. "Where [are] the puppies?"
「ポンゴ！」パーディタは動揺しながら叫びました。「子犬たちはどこ？！」
Pon/go [raced] up the stairs and [began] seaching the rooms one by one. Per/dita [went] to check the kichen.
ポンゴは階段を駆け上がり、部屋を一つ一つ調べ始めました。パーディタはキッチンをチェックしに行きました。
Pon/go [hurried] into the sittinig room to rejoin Per/dita, who [was] on the brink of tears. "Oh, Pon/go!" she [cried]. "Where can---"
ポンゴは急いでリビングに戻ってきました。パーディタは目に涙を浮かべていました。
「あぁ、ポンゴ！」と彼女は叫びました。「いったいどこを探せば・・・」
"Hush, darling," [said] Pon/go, his ears [pricked] intently. The two dogs [fell] silent.
「落ち着くんだ」両耳をピンとたてながらポンゴが言いました。二匹は耳をすませました。
Then they both [heard] it: a tiny snore coming from the direction of the couch. There, [nestled] among the cushions, [were] the puppies, sound asleep!
やがて二匹はソファーの方からかすかにいびきの音がするのを聞きつけました。行ってみると、クッションの間に子犬たちが心地よさげに埋まってぐっすり眠っていました。
"I [found] Na/nny!" Ro/ger [called]. "She [fell] asleep in her chair!"
「ナニーがいたよ！」ロジャーが呼びました。「椅子に座ったまま眠ってる！」
Per/dita [was] busy counting the sleeping puppies. "...twelve, thirteen, fourteen...Oh, Pon/go! One of the puppies [isn't] here!"
パーディタはせっせと、眠っている子犬達の数を数えていきました。「……１２、１３、１４…まぁ、ポンゴ！一匹いないわ！」
But Pon/go [had trotted] into the next room. "Here he [is], darling!" he [called]. "It['s]Lu/cky, of course. He'[s watching] the New Year's Day celebration on television."
ポンゴはすでに隣の部屋に駆けつけていました。「ここにいたよ」と呼びました。「やっぱりラッキーだな。テレビの新年お祝い番組を見てるよ。」
