January 21: Money Matters （お金は大事）
“Greetings, slotted pig,” said Buzz.
「ごきげんよう、溝穴付きブタ君。」とバズは言いました。
“Hello, Buzz,” said Hamm the piggy bank. “How are you getting used to life here in Andy’s room?”
「こんちわ、バズ。」ブタ型貯金箱のハムは言いました。「ここ、アンディの部屋での暮らしはどうだい？」
“Life on this planet is interesting,” Buzz said. “I look forward to giving a full report to my commander upon my return to base.”
「この惑星の暮らしは興味深い。」とバズは言いました。「基地に戻って上官にどっさり報告書を出すのが楽しみだ。」
Hamm rolled his eyes. Buzz had no idea he was not an actual space ranger. It would be funny if it weren’t so…annoying.
ハムはくるりと目を回しました。バズは自分が本物のスペースレンジャーでないことを知らないのです。それは面白いというよりむしろ、ちょっとイラッとくるものがありました。
“So, pig,” Buzz continued. “Today I noticed Andy placing several round silvery discs into the slot on your back.”
「ところでブタ君。」とバズは続けました。「今日、私は気がついたのだが、アンディが君の背中の溝穴に銀色の円板を何枚か入れていたな。」
“Yes,” began Hamm, “that was---“
「そうだよ。」とハムは話し始めました。「あれはね…」
“And now these silver discs reside in your stomach cavity?” Buzz interrupted.
「で、今、その銀色の円板は君の腹腔の中に住み着いているわけだな？」とバズがハムの言葉をさえぎって言いました。
“Well, yes,” began Hamm, patting his full belly. “But---“
「まぁ、そうだね。」とハムは自分のたっぷりしたお腹をぺちぺちしながら言いました。「でもさ・・・」
“Aha!” Buzz cried. “I have determined your power source! What an interesting life form you are! This will definitely make it into my report!”
「そうか！」とバズは叫びました。「私は君のパワーの源をつきとめたぞ！君はなんと興味深い生命体なのだ！このことはかならず私の調査報告書の中に書き入れよう！」
Hamm shook his head as Woody and the rest of the toys walked up to join them.
ハムがやれやれと頭を振っているところに、ウッディと他のおもちゃ達が歩いてきました。
“What’s going on?” Woody asked.
「なにが起こってるんだい？」とウッディは尋ねました。
“Greetings, cowboy,” said Buzz. “I was just inquiring about the pig’s power source.”
「ごきげんよう、カウボーイ。」とバズが言いました。「私はちょうどブタのパワーの源について尋ねていたところだ。」
“He’s talking about the coins in my belly,” Hamm explained.
「ぼくのお腹のなかのコインの話をしてるんだよ。」とハムが説明しました。
“No, Buzz,” explained Bo Peep. “Those aren’t power sources. They’re money.”
「違うんだなぁ、バズ。」とボー・ピープが説明しました。「それはパワーの源なんかじゃない。お金だよ。」
“What’s money?” Buzz asked.
「お金とは何だ？」バズが尋ねました。
“It’s what people use to get the things they need---like food, or toys, or comic books,” said Woody.
「それは人間たちが必要なものを手に入れるために使うもんだ。食べ物とか、おもちゃとか、漫画とかな。」とウッディが言いました。
Buzz thought for a moment. “Perhaps I need to procure some of this power source…um, I mean money…for myself,” he suggested thoughtfully.
バズはしばらく考えていました。「おそらく私はそのパワーの源、じゃなくてお金、を自分で獲得してみる必要がありそうだ。」考え深げに彼はそう言いました。
The rest of the toys started chattering excitedly. They had never thought about what they would do if they actually had some money! Woody started daydreaming about what he would buy. Then he looked around and laughed out loud. “We’re toys!” he said. “Toys can’t just go to the store and walk up to the counter to buy things!”
他のおもちゃ達は興奮気味にしゃべり始めました。彼らは、もし実際にお金を手にしたら何をしようかなんてことを考えてみたことがありませんでした。ウッディは自分なら何を買うだろうと空想し始めました。それから彼はまわりを見回して大きな声で笑いだしました。「俺たちはおもちゃだぜ！」と言いました。「おもちゃは店に出かけて何かを買うためにカウンターに持ってったりなんてできないんだ！」
“Speak for yourself, cowboy,” said Buzz. “Perhaps you’ve forgotten---I am not a toy!”
「勝手に言っているがいい。」とバズは言いました。「君はもしかして忘れているようだがーーー私はおもちゃではないのでね！」
Hamm shook his head at the crazy, mixed-up space ranger. “I give up!” he said.
ハムは、頭のおかしい妄想狂のスペースレンジャーにうんざりしたように頭を振りました。「もうお手上げだよ！」
