January 7: Out for a Spin （ちょっとひとっ飛び）

One day, Princess Ki/da was showing Mi/lo and the rest of the explorers the wonders of Atlantis. The explorers wanted to search for treasure, but Mi/lo preferred to go exploring with Ki/da.
ある日、キーダ姫はマイロとその仲間の探検家たちに、アトランティスの素晴らしいところを案内していました。探検家たちは宝探しをしたがっていましたが、マイロはキーダと探検を続けたいと思っていました。
The princess led him up the staircase of a huge pyramid. When they reached the top, they found a shark-shaped vehicle.
キーダ姫はマイロと巨大なピラミッドの階段を上がっていきました。頂上につくと、二人はサメの形をした乗り物を見つけました。
“It’s an Ak/tirak,” Ki/da told him.
「これはアクティラックよ」とキーダはマイロに言いました。
“Can we take it for a spin?” Mi/lo asked.
「ちょっと乗ってみてもいいかな？」とマイロは尋ねました。
“If you wish,” Ki/da said.
「お望みなら」とキーダは言いました。
Ki/da used a crystal that hung around her neck to start the engine. Then she and Mi/lo climbed on.
キーダは首にかけていたクリスタルを使って、エンジンをかけました。そして二人は中に乗り込みました。
Mi/lo pushed a button and the Ak/tirak blasted into the sky! He and K/da dove low over the water, skimming the waves. Suddenly, a school of flying fish burst out of the water and surrounded the flier. One flapped in Mi/lo’s face and he nearly lost control.
マイロがボタンを押すと、アクティラックは空へ向かって飛び出しました！二人は海面すれすれを、波をくぐりながら進みました。突然、海中からトビウオの群れが飛び出してきて、乗り物を取り囲みました。一匹がマイロの顔にぶちあたり、マイロは乗り物のコントロールを失いそうになりました。
“We’ve got to get back to land!” he exclaimed.
「陸に戻らなくちゃ！」とマイロは叫びました。
The Ak/tirak shot up into the sky.
アクティラックは空中高く飛び上がりました。
“Beware of the cliffs ahead!” Ki/da warned.
「前の崖に気をつけて！」とキーダが警告しました。
Mi/lo tried to maneuver the vehicle, but the Ak/rirak could not fly high enough. They were about to crash!
マイロは乗り物をうまく操縦しようとしましたが、アクティラックは十分に高く上昇することができませんでした。二人は崖にぶつかりそうになりました！
“The cave!” Ki/da cried, pointing to a hole in the side of the mountain.
「洞窟があるわ！」キーダは叫んで、山腹に開いた穴を指さしました。
Mi/lo steered the Ak/tirak through the entrance. Twisting the flier, he dodged stalactites hanging from the cavern roof. Then he saw the head of a huge stone fish in the cave wall. Its mouth was open, and daylight streamed through it. He twisted the controls, and the Ak/tirak flew right through the fish’s gaping mouth.
マイロはアクティラックを操縦して、入り口から中に入りました。乗り物を巧みに操りながら、洞窟の天井から下がる鍾乳洞をよけていきました。突然、マイロは洞窟の壁に石造りの大きな魚の頭があるのを見つけました。日の光がその中に差し込んでいました。マイロは乗り物の舵を切り、その魚の大きく開いた口の中に入っていきました。
Just then, the flier’s tail scraped the stone fish and the Ak/tirak flew out of control.
ちょうどその時、乗り物の尾翼が石の魚に接触して、アクティラックはコントロールを失いました。
“Hang on!” Mi/lo cried.
「しっかりつかまって！」とマイロは叫びました。
The flier hit the side of the pyramid and bounced. It landed at the exact spot where Ki/da and Mi/lo first found it.
乗り物はピラミッドの脇にぶつかって跳ねました。そして、キーダとマイロが最初にそれを発見したのと全く同じ場所に不時着しました。
The others heard the crash and rushed over. They found Mi/lo and Ki/da standing next to the wrecked flier.
仲間の探検家たちが衝突の音を聞きつけて駆け寄ってきました。みんなはマイロとキーダが壊れた乗り物の横に立っているのを見つけました。
“What happened?” Au/drey cried.
「何があったの？」オードリーが声を上げました。
“We went out for a spin,” Mi/lo said.
「そこらへんをちょっと遊覧飛行してきたんだよ」とマイロは言いました。
“Are you saying you actually flew this wreck?” Au/drey demanded.
「このぶっ壊れたヤツを実際に飛ばしたっていうの？」とオードリーは問い詰めました。
“I did!” said Mi/lo. “But it’s pretty obvious I need to sign up for Atlantean driver’s ed!”
「そうさ」とマイロは言いました。「でも、あきらかに僕は、アトランティスの教習所に申し込みしなきゃいけないな。」
