Juanuary 5: Do/nald Takes Flight (ドナルドは飛ぶ)
“Da/isy, I have a surprise for you,” said Do/nald D/uck one clear spring day. “I’ve been taking flying lessons.”
「デイジー、君をビックリさせたいと思ってさ」ある晴れた春の日、ドナルドはそう言いました。「僕、飛行機の操縦を習ってるんだ」
“That is a surprise,” said Da/isy D/uck.
「それはホントにビックリだわ」とデイジー・ダックは言いました。
Do/nald took Da/isy to a nearby airport. On the runway sat an old-fashioned plane with open-air seats. Together they climbed into the small plane. Then Do/nald started the engine.
ドナルドは、近所の空港にデイジーを連れていきました。滑走路には、オープンエアシートを備えた旧式の飛行機が停まっていました。二人は一緒に小さなその飛行機に乗り込みました。そしてドナルドはエンジンをかけました。
“Can you do any tricks?” shouted Da/isy.
「曲芸飛行とかできるの？」デイジーは大きな声で言いました。
“Sure!” called Do/nald. He steered the plane into a loop the loop.
「もちろん！」ドナルドは言いました。操縦桿を握り、宙返りをしてみせました。
“You’re a very good pilot, Do/nald!” Da/isy cried, clapping her hands.
「ほんとに操縦が上手いのね、ドナルド！」デイジーは手を叩きながら言いました。
Do/nald was so proud of himself he decided to fly out to sea. Before long, however, the plane’s engine began to cough and choke.
ドナルドはとても嬉しくなって、海の方まで飛んでみることにしました。けれど、いくらも行かないうちに、エンジンがガタガタ音を立てて止まりそうになりました。
“Uh-oh,” Do/nald said as the plane began to drift toward the water.
「おっと、まずい」とドナルドは言いました。飛行機の高度がだんだん下がっていくのです。
“Is anything wrong?” asked Da/isy.
「どうかしたの？」デイジーが尋ねました。
Do/nald knew they were running out of gas, but he didn’t want Da/isy to find out. “Everything is fine, Da/isy,” Do/nald said nervously.
ドナルドは飛行機がガス欠なのに気づいたのですが、デイジーには知られたくありませんでした。「ぜんぜん問題ないよ、デイジー」とドナルドはどぎまぎしながら言いました。
He looked down and saw something floating below them. It looked like an airport runway! But what would a runway be doing in the middle of the ocean?
下を見ると、何かが浮いているのが見えました。空港の滑走路みたいです！でもあんな海のど真ん中で、一体、滑走路が何をしているというのでしょう？
As the plane drifted closer to the water, Do/nald realized he had no choice. He’d have to land his plane on the floating runway.
飛行機が水面に近づくにしたがって、ドナルドはほかにできることはないと悟りました。あの浮いている滑走路に降りるしかありませんでした。
Suddenly Do/nald realized it wasn’t a runway at all. It was the top deck of a huge ocean liner!
急にドナルドは、それが滑走路ではないことに気が付きました。巨大な豪華客船だったのです！
“Duck!” yelled one of the passengers.
「アヒルだ！」と乗船客の一人が叫びました。
Do/nald zoomed over their heads and carefully landed the plane on the long wide deck.
ドナルドは乗客達の頭上をブーンッと飛びさってから、広々とした甲板に注意深く着陸しました。
“Hey, it really is a duck!” cried one of the passengers.
「おい、ありゃホントにアヒルだぞ」乗客が叫びました。
Just then an announcement came over the ship’s speakers. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Dinner is served!”
ちょうどその時、客船のスピーカーがアナウンスしました。「ご乗船の皆様、こんばんは。ご夕食の用意ができました！」
D/onald helped Da/isy out of the plane. He was sure she would be upset. But she wasn’t.
ドナルドはデイジーが飛行機を降りるのを手伝いました。きっとデイジーは怒ってるだろうなと思いました。でも、そうではありませんでした。
“Dinner on a cruise ship!” she cried. “Do/nald, you’re just full of surprises, aren’t you?”
「豪華客船でディナーなのね！」デイジーは言いました。「ドナルド、あなたってサプライズでいっぱいじゃない？」
“Yes, indeed,” said Do/nald with a huge sigh of relief.
「そうなんだよ」とドナルドはホッと大きく息をつきながら言いました。
“Oh, Do/nald, you’re the best,” said Da/isy.
「あぁ、ドナルド。あなたって最高。」デイジーが言いました。
No, I’m not, thought Do/nald. What I really am is one lucky duck.
（そうじゃないんだけどさ。）とドナルドは思いました。（ホントの僕はただ運が良いだけのアヒルなんだよね。）
