January 10: Imagine That!（すご～い！）
The carnival was in town and Pinocchio couldn’t wait to see it. He grabbed his friend Jiminy Cricket, and off they went!
街にカーニバルが来ました。ピノキオは見に行きたくてじっとしていられませんでした。友達のジミニー・クリケットを誘い、二人はさっそく出かけていきました。
Pinocchio was awed by the marvelous sights. “That elephant is amazing!” he cried.
素晴らしい光景の数々にピノキオは心を奪われました。「あのゾウはすごいね！」ピノキオは声を上げました。
“I suppose,” said Jiminy politely.
「そんな感じだね」ジミニーはお行儀よく答えました。
Next they came to a lion’s cage. The big cat opened his mouth and roared.
次はライオンの檻でした。このライオンは大きな口を開けて唸り声をあげました。
“Look at those teeth!” Pinocchio marveled.
「あの歯を見てよ！」ピノキオは夢中でした。
Jiminy Cricket nodded. “They’re pretty big, it’s true.”
ジミニーはうなづきました。「たしかに大きいね。ホントに。」
Then they saw a giraffe.
それからキリンを見ました。
“What a long neck!” Pinocchio exclaimed.
「なんて長い首なんだ！」ピノキオは叫びました。
“Giraffes are all right, I guess,” said Jiminy with a shrug.
「キリンはいいね。いいんじゃないかな。」ジミニーは肩をすくめながら言いました。
Pinocchio was confused. “If you don’t like elephants, lions or giraffes, what kind of carnival animals do you like?” Pinocchio asked.
ピノキオはヘンだなぁと思いました。「ゾウもライオンもキリンも好きじゃないのなら、どんな動物が君は好きなの？」とピノキオは尋ねました。
“Fleas,” said Jiminy.
「ノミだよ」ジミニーは言いました。
“Fleas?” Pinocchio said, even more confused.
「ノミ？」ピノキオはますますヘンだなと思いました。
“Come on! I’ll show you,” said Jiminy.
「おいで！見せてあげるよ」ジミニーは言いました。
Jiminy led Pinocchio to a tent with a sign that read Flea Circus. Inside, Pinocchio saw a tiny merry-go-round and little swings. There were small animal cages and a little trapeze. There was even a tiny big top with three miniature rings. But no matter how hard he looked, Pinocchio could not see any fleas.
ジミニーはピノキオを連れて【ノミのサーカス】という看板を立てたテントにやってきました。ピノキオはテントの中に、とても小さなメリーゴーランドとブランコがあるのを見つけました。小さな檻と空中ブランコの道具もありました。３つの曲馬場のついた小さいサーカス用のテントまでありました。でも、どんなに目をこらして、ピノキオは１匹のノミも見つけられませんでした。
“That’s because there aren’t any fleas,” Jiminy explained.
「そりゃ１匹のノミもいないからだよ」ジミニーは言いました。
“What’s the point, then?” Pinocchio asked.
「つまりどういうこと？」ピノキオは尋ねました。
“The point is imagination,” said Jiminy. “Why, you can do anything with your imagination. You can even see the fleas at the flea circus.”
「つまり、想像力がカギなんだ。」とジミニーは言いました。「想像力があればなんでもできるんだよ。ノミのサーカスだって見ることができるってわけ。」
Pinocchio laughed and joined in the game. “That flea is going to jump through a ring of fire,” he said. “I hope he makes it!”
ピノキオは笑って、このゲームに参加することにしました。「あのノミは火の輪を飛び越えるところだね。」と言いました。「うまくいきますように！」
“Now the fleas are doing acrobatics,” Jiminy declared.
「あっちのノミは曲芸をしているんだ。」とジムニーはきっぱりと言いました。
“Look! They’ve made a flea pyramid,” said Pinocchio. “And the flea on top is standing on his hands!”
「見て！ノミが集まってピラミッドを作った。」とピノキオが言いました。「そしててっぺんのノミは逆立ちをしてる！」
After they had watched the flea circus for a long while, it was time to go home.
長いことノミのサーカスを眺めていましたが、やがて家に帰る時間になりました。
“What did you think of the flea circus?” asked Jiminy Cricket.
「ノミのサーカスはどうだった？」とジミニー・クリケットは尋ねました。
“It was the most amazing circus I’ve ever seen, and I didn’t really see it at all!” Pinocchio replied.
「今まで見たことのあるサーカスの中で、一番すごかったよ！しかもまだ全部見終わったわけじゃないんだ！」とピノキオは答えました。
“Yes, indeed. You imagined it,” said Jiminy Cricket. “Imagine that!”
「そのとおりさ。君はそのすべてを想像したんだ。」とジミニーは言いました。「すごいじゃないか！」
